Students and teachers alike are preparing for the Kettle Moraine High School Campus annual film festival. This year, Writing Focus mentors Mr. Weber and Mrs. Beal are offering a film festival preparation seminar for students to work together and create a story, script, and final film to submit to the festival. With a variety of film genres being entered, there’s bound to be something for everyone to enjoy.

In this seminar, students are working in groups of five to create ten-minute films over the course of six weeks. Once all of the films are done, the students will vote on which films they think should make to the big screen. Mr. Weber said that the purpose of the seminar was to give students an opportunity to “work collaboratively on a project for an authentic audience.” He also hopes that students will “polish their writing, their group work, their revision skills, and their ability to meet a deadline.”

Freshman Writing Focus Max Olsen states that her group has their “story all written out,” but they have not yet started filming. Her film is about an apple named Jazzee who wants to become a tree and unleash her full potential. Olsen says she signed up for the seminar because she wanted to get “experience with both filming and editing.” Like many others in her class, she hopes to create a successful film.

Other films being shown in the festival include (but are not limited) to a Rube Goldberg documentary, KM Middle School short films, and other films/commercials from Legacy film teacher Mr. Stinnett’s Film Design class.

If the seminar continues to run smoothly, Mr. Weber would like to run it in the future. He said that he wants to “push collaborative creativity as often as possible.” With the film festival creeping up, productions are in full swing. Be sure to check out those films and more on May 30th at 6:30PM in the KMHS auditorium.
