Old World Wisconsin holds an annual event called Legends and Lore which is a spooky compilation of folklore stories. This is the second year that Kettle Moraine School for Arts and Performance (KM Perform) has been asked to help in the making of this wonderful experience. Legends and Lore is a Halloween event that includes many different skits that visitors can interact with. This year’s Legends and Lore includes the story of Baba Yaga, the Wendigo, and even a haunted Grimm House. This article spotlights the traditional story of Anansi the Spider including the plans and progress for the show.

Anansi the Spider is an old folk story from the Ashanti people of Ghana who imagined Anansi as a half spider, half-man deity. Born from the earth and sky, he has many abilities that enable him to appear to humans, give wisdom, and play harmless pranks every once in a while. Anansi the Spider is usually portrayed as a spider with a man’s head but he has also been shown as a man with eight arms and eight eyes, walking on two legs. Be sure to check out the event if you want to see the story.

During Legends and Lore, the people involved in the Anansi event will include a narrator that tells the full story of Anansi the Spider as well as a shadow puppet show to follow along. Mackenzie Gagnon is the student leader of this year’s show. She has involved a wonderful group of people for her project, including Lily Gyles helping make the spider puppets. The show that Gagnon has made focuses on the original, fatherly figure by going off Anansi the Spider’s book, Anansi the Spider: A Tale from the Ashanti.

The cast has been working hard on the show and the sets are well on their way to being finished already. Legends and Lore takes place on October 18th, 19th, 25th, and 26th, from 5:30 to 9:30 pm. The Anansi the Spider show will be in the General Store and it is put on every 15 minutes. It is a kid-friendly story so feel free to bring the little ones along!
