Have you heard? Kettle Moraine School for Arts and Performance (KM Perform) is participating in the Old World Wisconsin event,  Legends and Lore. Different groups of students are working on shows and skits, such as Herne the Hunter, Jack O’Kent, Baba Yaga, The Wendigo, and more!

Herne the Hunter is a mythical creature, notorious for his mysteriousness. According to Ancient Pages, “The original source for many of the tales told of Herne remains unknown. Herne the Hunter was mentioned by William Shakepeare who described him as ‘a spirit’ and ‘sometimes a keeper … in Windsor forest.’ ” Herne is said to be an antlered ghost described as half-man, half-deer.

Different cultures and people see Herne in different ways. Most see Herne as “The Horned King,” while others call him, “Herne, God of the Wild Hunt.” LearnReligions says, “He is the god of the wild hunt, of the game in the forest. Herne’s antlers connect him to the deer, which was given a position of great honor. After all, killing a single stag could mean the difference between survival and starvation, so this was a powerful thing indeed.” Herne has a lot of power that is used for different things, depending on the stories people hear. Herne the Hunter is mysterious, as said before; not many stories are told about him because he always seems to be a mystery. With different cultures come different stories and versions of Herne; it all depends on what you believe.

Herne the Hunter’s involvement in Legends and Lore will give a good scare as KM Perform’s own Math Teacher Mr. Anderson dons his Herne costume and gives chase throughout the maze. Having a half-man, half-deer chasing people through the maze will give people chills at just the thought of it!

Many of the KM Perform students are excited to be working with Old World Wisconsin once again this year for Legends and Lore. These students are showing their professional side this Halloween! Herne the Hunter’s maze is sure to give people a fright this October 18th, 19th, 25th, and 26th, from 5:30-9:30 PM. Hope you’re ready to get your scare on!
