South Pacific is a comedic musical about main character Nellie and how she meets the love of her life, Emile. But there is something she doesn’t know. Emile had children with his late wife, and Nellie is not the biggest fan. Nellie tries not to let it bother her, but things become increasingly difficult; eventually, she decides she is going to end their relationship. Just before she ends her relationship with the man of her dreams, the man himself invites her to dinner and by some happenstance she decides to stay with Emile.

Now that you know some of the story of this year’s musical, let’s talk about the history behind South Pacific. The storyline of the musical takes place in 1945 during World War II on an island in the Pacific ocean. The score for South Pacific was composed by Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein III in the early 1940s. The musical premiered in 1949 on Broadway and was a big hit, leading to nearly 2,000 more performances. The song “Bali Ha’i” was based on the island of Ambae (although the original island that the scene was filmed on – the north shore of Kauaʻi – is still known as Bali Hai today.
